Is Your Child Ready for Braces?

Orthodontic care for kids usually happens in one of two stages. Here’s how to tell which one you’re looking at.

Phase 1 · Early Treatment

Typically Ages 7 to 10

For younger children whose jaws and adult teeth are still developing. Phase 1 addresses specific problems early, while growth can be gently guided, often making later treatment simpler.

Phase 2 · Full Treatment

Typically Ages 11 and Up

For older children and teens once most permanent teeth have come in. Phase 2 focuses on aligning the full smile and correcting the bite. This is the stage most parents picture when they think of braces.

If your child is younger than 10, or your dentist mentioned “early treatment,” learn about Phase 1 Early Treatment for Kids. The rest of this page focuses on full treatment (Phase 2) for kids ages 10 and up.

Timing

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. That first visit usually isn’t about starting treatment. It’s about spotting potential problems early, while a child’s jaw is still growing and easier to guide.

Most kids who need full braces start between ages 10 and 14, once most of their permanent teeth have come in. The first consultation at Thousand Smiles is free, so there’s no cost to find out where your child stands.

Three Possible Outcomes of a First Evaluation

  • NowStart early (Phase 1) treatment to guide growth and prevent bigger problems.
  • LaterMonitor your child’s development and begin full treatment when the timing is right.
  • NoneNo treatment needed. Sometimes the best news is that everything is on track.

What to Look For

Signs Your Child May Need Braces

1

Crowded or Overlapping Teeth

When teeth don’t have enough room, they overlap or twist. Crowding makes teeth harder to clean and tends to worsen over time.

2

Large Gaps Between Teeth

Noticeable spaces can point to missing teeth, jaw-size differences, or habits, and may affect how the bite comes together.

3

Difficulty Biting or Chewing

Trouble biting into food, or frequent cheek and tongue biting, can signal a bite that isn’t lining up correctly.

4

Teeth That Don’t Meet Properly

Overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite can affect eating, speech, and long-term tooth wear.

5

Mouth Breathing or Jaw Clicking

Persistent mouth breathing, or clicking and shifting in the jaw, can be linked to how the jaw and airway are developing.

6

Teeth Coming in Late, Early, or Crooked

Baby teeth lost too early or too late, or adult teeth erupting in unusual spots, can be a sign the bite needs guidance.

7

Thumb Sucking Past Age 5

Thumb or finger sucking after about age 5 can push teeth and shape the developing jaw, which sometimes needs early attention.

8

Speech Difficulties

Certain speech sounds can be affected by how the teeth and jaw are positioned.

Some of these resolve on their own; others get harder to treat with age. A free evaluation (first recommended by age 7, and again if anything changes) is the easiest way to know.

Clear Aligners

A customized, removable aligner system designed to address your child’s unique orthodontic needs with comfort and flexibility.

Do Braces for Kids Make Sense Now?

Every child’s smile develops differently, but certain signs can indicate that braces may be beneficial:

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth

  • Gaps that are unusually large

  • Habits like thumb sucking or mouth breathing

  • Difficulty biting or chewing food

  • Baby teeth that fall out too early or too late

Even if you’re unsure, scheduling an orthodontic checkup around age seven is a smart step. In some cases, we may recommend starting treatment right away. Other times, we’ll simply monitor growth and development to determine the optimal timing for braces.

At Thousand Smiles Orthodontics, our goal is to ensure your child’s smile develops healthy, straight, and confident, while preventing bigger dental problems in the future.

For Kids and Parents

How We Make Treatment Easier

Orthodontics can feel like a lot, for kids and for parents. Here’s how we try to make it calm and clear.

We Explain in Kid-Friendly Terms

We walk through what we’re doing and why, with no big medical words left untranslated.

We Keep Parents in the Loop

You leave each visit knowing what we did, what’s next, and what to watch for at home.

We’re Patient With Nervous Kids

Some kids walk in excited, others need a minute. We don’t rush anyone through.

We Schedule Around School

Adjustments are short, and we offer morning and Saturday options to minimize missed school.

We Answer Between Visits

Not sure whether to call? Call or text. We’d rather hear from you than have you worry.

Step by Step

What to Expect at Each Stage

Written for parents, but easy for kids to follow along too.

1

Your Free First Visit

You and your child meet Dr. Pan together. We examine teeth and bite, take 3D digital scans (no goopy molds), look at growth, and explain what we see. You’ll leave knowing whether treatment is needed now, later, or not at all.

2

Treatment Plan and Pricing

If treatment is recommended, we walk you both through the plan, the timeline, and the exact cost, including financing options. No pressure, no surprises.

3

Placement Appointment

The first treatment visit is when we place braces or deliver the first aligners, usually 60 to 90 minutes. We show your child how to care for them and send written instructions home too.

4

Regular Adjustments

You’ll visit every 3 to 5 weeks for quick adjustments and progress checks, scheduled around school. Mild soreness for a day or two after is normal; soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief help.

5

Retainers

When treatment is complete, we remove the braces or finish the final aligner and fit retainers. Consistent retainer wear protects everything you both worked for, and we teach you how to make it stick.
